Confirmation of Tax Return Filing and Tax Payment

Where can I get confirmation that my tax return has been filed and my taxes have been paid?

The official confirmation of your tax return filing, as well as your income and taxes paid, comes in the form of IRS Transcripts:

  • Tax Return Transcript – This is essentially your tax return. If the IRS makes any changes to your return, in addition to a letter from the IRS explaining the changes, you will be able to see in the transcript exactly which line was modified.

  • Account Transcript – Contains information on assessed and paid taxes, refunds, as well as penalties and interest.

  • Wage and Income Transcript – This contains information about all forms (W-2, 1099) filed on your behalf by third parties. It is very useful for those whose unscrupulous employers never sent them the form but did file it with the IRS.

  • Verification of Non-filing Letter – Confirms that a tax return was not filed for the selected year.

You can request (download) these transcripts in your online account on the IRS website under the “Tax Records” section. Keep in mind that they do not appear immediately after you file your tax return. The IRS typically starts issuing transcripts around May.
